Entering crescendo and decrescendo markings (hairpins)

Enter crescendo and decrescendo markings, commonly referred to as hairpins, by selecting them from the dynamics palette and clicking near the staff to which they will be attached.

There are two types of hairpins: single and double. Single hairpins are crescendos and decrescendos. Double hairpins are back-to-back crescendos or decrescendos, representing a swell or dip in the loudness of the song.

Dragging the hairpin tool to the right creates a crescendo. Dragging it to the left creates a decrescendo.

Dragging the dual hairpin tool to the right creates a crescendo-decrescendo—a swell. Dragging the double hairpin tool to the left creates a decrescendo-crescendo—a dip.
