Step Recording from a MIDI Device

To step record from a MIDI device:

  1. From the Setup menu choose Record/Play to open the Record and Play Setup dialog box. Choose either Replace or Overdub and click OK.

  2. In the Graphic Editor window, choose a track and output to record on.

  3. Use the Arrow Tool to click the location where you want to start recording. To choose a precise bar or beat, click in the time line above the piano roll; to choose a particular clock tick, click in the piano roll or use the Edit > Set Selection dialog box.

  4. Click the Horizontal Keyboard icon in the upper portion of the Graphic Editor window to enable Step Recording from your MIDI controller

  5. Select a note value by pressing a number on the Macintosh keyboard (1 is a whole note, 2 a half, 4 a quarter, etc.) or click the note icon and select from the popup menu. Pressing a 3 or clicking the 3 next to the note icon toggles triplet values on or off. Pressing or clicking the period toggles dotted values on or off.

  6. Select a duration by clicking the % of Value field at the top of the Graphic Editor window.

  7. Play the pitch you want on your controllerMet90000.gifMetro records the pitch and velocity you transmit. Press r or click the word 'Rest' at the top of the Graphic Editor window to enter a rest.

  8. Repeat steps 5-7 for every note or rest you want to enter.

You can step enter chords from a MIDI controller by holding down a note and playing the additional voices. while continuing to sustain the initial note of the chord (you'll see the notes stack up in the Graphic Editor window's Notes display). Pressing or clicking the 5 or 7 toggles quintuplets and septuplets on or off.
