Selecting Notes Defined by Particular Criteria (Selection Filter) If the Selection Filter is checked in the Switches menu, only the notes within a selection that match certain criteria are affected by edit operations. For example, only notes within a particular velocity or duration range are affected by a Cut operation. If the Selection Filter is Off (not checked), any existing Selection Filter criteria will be ignored and all notes within a selection will be affected by edit operations. To toggle between Selection Filter On and Off settings, press Command-F. You can easily see if the Selection Filter is On because any selection you make in the Graphic Editor window is displayed in the inverse of the selection color (set via the Macintosh Color Control Panel), or in a light gray selection rather than black on monochrome monitors. You use the Setup menu's Selection Filter submenu command, Assign to, to set up criteria for editing. To assign duration and velocity criteria: Select some data to edit. From the Setup menu, choose Selection Filter > Assign to. The Assign to Selection Filter dialog box appears. If you want notes with durations within a particular range to be affected by edit operations, check the Durations between checkbox and set the desired range. If you want notes with velocities within a particular range to be affected, check the Velocities between checkbox and set a range. Assigning a rhythm pattern as criterion for a selection requires selecting a one measure pattern; Metro automatically saves the pattern when choosing the Selection Filter’s Assign To dialog box. If a selection lasts longer than one measure, only the first measure of the rhythmic pattern will be applied. To assign a rhythm to the Selection Filter: Locate in the Graphic Editor window the measure that contains the desired beat pattern, and select it. Open the Selection Filter’s Assign To dialog box. Notice that the pattern you selected appears in the Assign To dialog box in the four beat field (the beat number will vary depending on the time signature of the selected data). You can delete any note in the rhythm pattern by clicking on it. When finished, click OK. Check the Start Times checkbox. Choose either the Occur or Don’t Occur button depending whether you want to specify notes with start times that do or don’t occur within a particular number of clocks of the selected rhythm. The black (or colored) areas indicate the regions of time that notes must occur within in order to be selected. Enter in clocks the distance a note can vary from the rhythm pattern yet still be selected by the Selection Filter and click OK. This pattern remains assigned to the Selection Filter until you assign a new pattern or restart Metro. If you want to edit the pattern, choose the Selection Filter’s Edit submenu to open the Edit Selection Filter dialog box and alter the criteria you assigned.
